Cp4 Waves Flashcards
What do waves transfer
Energy
What do waves do to travel
In order to travel/move waves vibrate
What is frequency
Frequency is the number of occurrences of a repeating event per unit of time. Usually the number of complete oscillations per second
What does oscilation mean
Oscilation means vibrate
What is frequency measured in
Hertz (Hz)
What is wavelength
Wavelength is the distance between two successive crests or troughs of a wave. the distance of one entire oscilation
What is amplitude
Amplitude is the distance from the equilibrium point of a wave to the crest or trough
What is a period
A period is the time required for one complete oscillation
What is velocity
Velocity is the speed of something in a given direction.
What is a crest
the highest point of a wave
what is a trough
the lowest point of a wave
What is a longitudinal wave
A wave where the vibrations are parralel to the energy transfer. the vibrations can be compressed or spread out
What is a transverse wave
A wave where the the direction of motion of the wave is perpendicular to the direction of motion of the particles. the vibrations can go up or down
Whats an example of a longitudinal wave
Sound wave
What is an example of an transverse wave
any of the EMF spectrum,an actual wave and others
what is the equation for frequency
Frequency = 1 / time of F=1/T
What is the equation for Velocity (also known as wave speed in this topic)
Velocity = frequency x wavelength
How do you calculate speed
speed = distance/time
Describe how you would measure the velocity of air
- place two microphones,data loggers or people with stopwatches at a set distance apart
- create a loud sound from one side and see how big the difference is between the times the sound was heard in one area and the other
- divide the set distance by the differance you have just discovered
Describe how you would measure the velocity of waves on surface water
- get a very big bucket or area of water
- Splash the water on one side and take a picture as the wave is travelling
- count how many waves pass a certain point as you splash the water (this is your frequency)
- measure the distance between two waves in the photo you have taken (this is your wavelength)
5.Times the wavelength by frequency to calculate speed
What is refraction
refraction is the redirection of a wave as it passes from one point/place to another.
how does the direction of a wave change as it goes from one material to another
the change in density when the object passes through a material causes a change in speed of the wave.
What are the effects of refraction
If the density is higher the speed is slower, if the density is lower the speed is faster
What is wave height
The verticle distance from the crest to the trough
