CP3C Keeping warm Flashcards
What is insulation
It slows down the rate at which energy is transferred out of a house by heating
Energy can be transferred by heating in different ways
What is conduction and what is an example
Vibrations are passed on between particles in a solid
Metals are good thermal conductors and wood is a poor conductor
What is convection
In convection part of a fluid that is a warmer than the rest rises and sets up a convection current
What is radiation and what is infrared radiation
The only way in which energy can be transferred through a vacuum
Infrared radiation can pass through gases and some solid materials. It is absorbed and emitted easily by dull dark surfaces and is absorbed/emitted poorly by light shiny surfaces
Is the thermal conductivity in straw bales low or high
Low meaning that energy is not transferred through easily by heating
