CP/spina bifida Flashcards
Spastic hemiplegia?
Arms more than legs
Spastic diplegia?
Bilateral spasticity of legs >arms
Spastic quadriplegia?
All 4 limbs affected
Athetoid?
Hypotonia with poor head control (less common, usu a/w birth asphyxia)
Meningocele contains?
Meninges + CSF
Nerve damage is minimal so disability is minimal
Myelomeningocele contains?
Contains CSF + nerve + part of spinal cord
Spinal cord damage always occurs resulting in paralysis or sensory loss
Define cerebral palsy
Disorder of tone, posture or movement which is due to a static lesion affecting the developing nervous system
Spastic CP?
Characterized by fixed increase in muscular tone
Types; hemiplegia, diplegia, quadriplegia
Define the word Athetoid?
Writhing involuntary pronation and flexion of distal extremity
Most common cause of spastic diplegia?
Peri-ventricular leukomalacia in preterm infants
List seven causes of CP.
Cerebral malformations Metabolic causes Genetic causes Infection (intra-uterine + extra-uterine) Stroke Hypoxic-ischaemic injury Trauma
What is the most common type of CP?
Spastic (accounts for 2/3 of cases)
List the types of CP (4)
Spastic
Dyskinetic
Ataxic
Mixed
How do Apgar scores & CP correlate?
Poorly
49000 infants reviewed:
75% CP cases had 5min Apgar 7-10
Apgar score of 0-3 at 20mins - CP rates of 60%
