A

All parts that make up place constantly changing
Physical - long + short term
Demographic - long - new born/die
- short - migration in and out
Flows - MNC
Sense of place - Places seen as a child will not feel same when return as adult

Inside vs Outsider?

A

Insider - Familiar with place and feel welcome, they belong

Outsiders - Feels unwelcome, they don’t belong (can still be familiar e.g immigrant, sexuality, gender)

How does Identity linked to Place?

A

People have shared characteristics to people in that place and it binds them together creating shared identity for people from that place :
1 - Local - share football club
2 - Regional - share accent
3 - National - share lang

Different types of Sense of place: Media and experienced?

A

1 - Experienced places: Places people live in or visited
2 - Media places: Not been to but seen in media

Sense of a media place can be different to lived experience of place e.g Tourist destinations present a sense of relaxation whereas to residents it may be a place of poverty and hardship

A
Near = Geographically close to where person lives 
Far = Geographically Distant tpo where person lives

Concept of Near and Far place:

A
  • People more likely to feel like insiders in near places as experienced them and feel comfortable vice versa
  • However, some people still feel like outsiders in near places and can feel more accepted in more distant places e.g migrants feel like outsiders in Uk but insiders in home country

How globalisation has affected peoples experience of geographical distance

A

1 - Increase in tech - far places quicker to travel to - therefore can be experienced quicker + more frequently - therefore can feel nearer
2 - Media - People become more familiar with media places - therefore place can feel nearer despite not existing or being geographically far away
3 - Internet - people remain connected with people and events in far places - feel nearer, feel like more of an insider

therefore, more people feel like insiders in places geographically far away

A

TNC’s + products can mean far and near places seem similar e.g same chain stores highstreet - clone towns
Placenesses = How globa. making distant places have same sens of place and look same
