CP - character of place Flashcards
Exogeneous vs Endogeneous factors that create place character?
Endogenous - Internal factors that shape a place’s character
Exogeneous - External factors which shape a places character; how places are related to other places and how these relationships can affect their character
What is the character of a place?
Physical and Human characteristics and flows (money, resources, money, ideas) in and out of place
Endogenous factors that affect physical characteristics of a place:
1 - Location:
- Places can be characterised by the features that are there due to their locations e.g Place at confluence of road routes could be characterised as trade centre
2 - Topography: (shape landscape)
- In a valley, places characterised as flat
- Topography also affects land use which can influence character e.g flat places used for arable farming
3 - Physical Geography: (natural features: e.g soil type, altitude)
- Affect character directly e.g different types rock from different physical landscapes
- Can affect other factors that affect character e.g place with abundant oil reserves attract FDI, change human environment and economy affecting character
Endogenous factors that affect the human characteristics of a place and activties?
Land use: (human activities that occur on the land)
- Farming, place thought of as rural
- Commercial business - urban
- Affects other factors: built environment: high rise, hgh density builidsngs - business centre
- changes over time, therefore charcetr can change over time e.g de-indutsrilsation
Built envrionmnet and infastrcuture (structures buikt fro transport, comm, services):
- Town and city centres: more infatsructure (railtracks, comm, sewers), higher builidngs, built featurss (cathedrals, sports stadia)
- VillagesL fewer builidngs, smaller, low density, less complex infastructure. Built features: village halls
Demographic + Economic charcteristics: (who lives in a place and what they are like e.g pop. age, relgion, )
- Seaside resorts: elderly as reitmenta reas - may then be charcterised as ‘old and lifelss’
- Eoncomic: high proprtion of people in Kensigton have high wage, thereforethen charcterosed as posh and wealthy area
How exogenous factors influence charcter of place:
1 - Charcter of places can be oinflunced by there relative locations to other places e.g villages outside major cities can be catergosied as commuter settlements
2 - Tourism (flow of people) - Las vegas has casinos, hotels for toursits and these changing human chactreristic and increaisng flows of money into
3 - Flows of investmnet affect charcter - Nissan invested in Sunderland by setting up factory - this infleunced charcter by icnreasing flows of people in due to emplyment opportunities and changed built environment
4 - Migration influence - parts of UK have ethnically diverse pop therefore changing demographic and therefore charcter
