covalent bonds Flashcards
What is covalent bonding
-There is an electrostatic attraction between the positive nuclei and the shared electrons
-Sharing of outer electrons in order for atoms to obtain a full outer shell
What is a coordinate bond
-A co-ordinate (dative covalent) bond contains a shared pair of electrons with both electrons supplied by one atom.
What is electronegativity
-Electronegativity is the ability for an atom to attract electrons towards itself in a covalent bond
What are the atoms with the most electronegativity
-F,O,Cl,N
How does electronegativity affect polarity
-The bigger the difference in electronegativity the more polar the bond is
Are atoms of the same element bonded toghether polar
-No, they have the same electronegativity so the shared atoms sit in the middle
