Covalent Bonding and Naming Compounds QUIZ Flashcards
Coordinate Covalent Bond
Results when a single atom provides both bonding electrons while the other atom does not contribute to any.
Non-Polar Covalent Bond
A covalent bond in which electrons are shared equally between two atoms of similar electronegativity.
Polar Covalent Bond
A covalent bond in which electrons are not shared equally between two atoms of similar electronegativity.
Covalent Bond Properties
1) Consist of individual molecules (not lattice).
2) Each e- has an attraction to both (+) nuclei of the bonded atoms.
3) Poor conductors of electricity in liquid aqueous states (because they do not break down into constituent ions).
H-Bonding
- Only for Polar Cov. Bonds
- Strongest bond!
- Hydrogen must bond with O, F, N
Dipole-Dipole
- Only for Polar Cov. Bonds
- Occur between oppositely charged ends of polar molecules.
LDF
- Weakest IMF
- Only for Non-Polar molecules
