Covalent Bonding and Covalent Properties Flashcards
What’s a molecular/covalent compound?
composed of two or more nonmetal atoms bonded together. they’ll share electrons to get to the nearest noble electronic configuration. ionic compounds are made up of a metal and a nonmetal.
Melting point of covalent compounds
low; most covalent substances are liquids or gases and produce individual molecules. attraction between these molecules is minimal compared to the attraction between ions in a crystal lattice, so not a lot of energy is required to overcome these minimal attractions
Boiling point of covalent compounds
low; attraction between molecules are easy to overcome because attraction between these molecules is minimal
What rule describes atoms desire to bond in order to be stable like the noble gases?
the octet rule
conductivity of covalent compounds
low; electrons are shared in covalent compounds so atoms don’t become oppositely charged ion (they’re neutral). neutral atoms are unable to conduct electricity because they won’t travel towards the cathode or the anode
