Course 1 Week 2 - Putting it All Together Flashcards
What are the programs called that tell the CPU how to run the device?
Services, Drivers
What does the BIOS tell the CPU?
That there’s a device it can connect to
What does BIOS stand for?
Basic Input Output Services
What is BIOS?
software that on start up initializes hardware on computer and gets OS running
Where is the BIOS stored?
in motherboard in a ROM chip (Read Only Memory) chip
What is UEFI? What does it do compared to BIOS?
Unified Extensible Firmware Interface
starts computer same as BIOS, but more modern and better compatibility and support for newer hardware
What does it mean when you turn on computer and hear a beep?
Computer is running a Power-On Self Test (POST)
1 Advantage of POST?
It figures out if there’s a problem and beep codes to identify problem
Where is the CMOS chip located?
motherboard
What does the CMOS chip do?
stores basic data (boosting computer, date, time, start up preferences)
How does BIOS and CMOS settings differ?
BIOS determine what devices to boot to
CMOS stores basic data preferences (date, time, start up)
What does reimaging a computer mean?
Wiping and reinstalling an OS
3 ways to perform reimaging?
- program stored on USB stick
- CD ROM
- Server accessible through network
Tell BIOS to boot up from these 3 options
First step to putting together a PC?
Prevent electrostatic discharge
What are 3 ways to prevent electrostatic discharge?
- touch electrical device that’s plugged in but not powered on every couple min
- wear anti-static wristband
- keep parts in anti-static bags until in use
