Course 1 Week 2 Mobile Device Repair, Display Types Flashcards
What is RMA?
Return Merchandise Authorization
warranty (service agreement) between your org/company with device manufacturer on how to replace devices
What should you do before sending out a device for repair?
Factory reset
What are the top 2 technologies used in mobile displays?
- LCD (Liquid crystal display)
- LED (Light Emitting Diodes)
What 2 things do LCD displays require? What is this called?
- Backlighting (often by LEDs)
- Polarizers to control path of backlight
Backlighting required = non-emissive/passive displays
What is BLU? What does it require?
Backlighting Unit
requires extra space (makes LCD thicker)
What are 3 common LCD display types for mobile devices?
- In-Plane Switching (IPS)
- Twisted Nematic (TN)
- Vertical Alignment (VA)
How do LCD displays work?
Crystals are aligned in a variety of patterns and manipulated with electricity
What LCD display type is used for touch screens and high-end monitors?
In-Plane Switching (IPS)
What is IPS glow?
Backlight is visible from side viewing angles
What is IPS LCD display types used in? 2 things
touch screens
high-end monitors
What is the most expensive LCD display type? Least expensive?
Most expensive = In-Plane Switching
Least Expensive = Twisted Nematic
What is the best general purpose, mid-range performance LCD display type?
Vertical Alignment
What are 3 common OLED display types?
- Active Matrix Organic Light emitting diode (AMOLED)
- Inorganic mini-LEDs (mLEDs)
- Inorganic micro-LEDs
How do OLED displays work?
electricity passed through diodes, diodes emit light using organic carbon based materials
What are displays that convert electricity into light called?
emissive/active displays
What does a cathode do?
Injects electrons
What does an anode do?
Removes electrons
How is an AMOLED display different from an OLED 2 things? What is it used in?
- AMOLED uses active matrix tech with active capacitors arranged in a matrix with thin film transistors (TFTs)
- Controls each individual pixel for rapid state changes like brightness, color
- for higher end phones, monitors, touchscreen
(Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode)
What are TFTs?
Thin film transistors
3 negatives for OLED and AMOLED?
- prone to image retention and burn in
- sensitive to light and moisture
- blue LEDs degrade faster than other colors = color distortion
What are 6 ways mLEDs are used? (Inorganic mini-LEDs)
- LCD backlight in smartphones (limited by LCD tech in these devices)
- public info displays
- signage
- vehicle displays (uLEDs also)
- electronics
- readable in sunlight
How are uLEDs and OLEDs the same? Differ?
work the same way but individual uLED size is extremely small 15 micrometers
How do mLEDs and OLEDs differ?
Work the same but individual LED size is smaller 60-60 micrometers
What is an OLED?
Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLED)
