Counterstrain Flashcards
Counterstrain
A gentle passive, indirect MSK technique
Diagnosis process is focused on
tenderness
Focus of counterstrain tart screen
Tender point
How long to hold counterstrain?
90 seconds
Trigger point vs Tender point
Trigger-local, characteristic pain pattern, pain radiates, patient twitches
Tenderpoint- Located in muscle, tendon, ligaments, fascia. No characteristic. No twitching. No radiation of tender
Pathological netural
Where we position our indirect techniques. Where muscles are relaxed.
4 stages of counterstrain
Relaxation, Normalization of nociceptive and neuro input phase, Washout, Slow return to neutral
Counterstrain is best for situations when
Sensitive patients , gentle technique, MSK related pain. Patient must be able to relax.
What does muscle spindle fiber do?
Monitor length of muscles
What does spinal gamma motor neurons do?
Balances length of agonist/antagonist. Uses alpha motor neurons control length of muscles to prevent sudden changes
