talking therapy
1
Q
counselling
A
- a goal-focused talking therapy that aims to increase a client’s self-esteem through unconditional positive regard from a therapist who actively listens to the client
2
Q
therapeutic relationship (counselling)
A
- counselling aims to create an open, warm and honest relationship so that the client develops trust in the counsellor
3
Q
emotional support (counselling)
A
- the counsellor actively listens to the client without judging them, and will not tell the client what to do
- aims to help the client find their own solutions
4
Q
relapse prevention plan (counselling)
A
- the client and counsellor work out a plan for when the client relapses so they get back on a recovery path quickly
5
Q
guided self-help
A
- a talking therapy based on CBT
- the client works through materials, learning to use CBT techniques with occasional support from a mental health professional
6
Q
self help (gsh)
A
- client becomes their own therapist, learning CBT-related techniques and strategies which they apply in their everyday lives to help them cope with stress
7
Q
guided
A
- client is supported by a mental health professional, usually remotely
- the professional ‘guides’ rather than directs
8
Q
strength (counselling)
A
- can be used to help a wide range of clients
- it is flexible so clients are more likely to actively engage and stick with counselling
9
Q
weakness (counselling)
A
- lack of evidence to support counselling’s effectiveness
- it is hard to measure the effectiveness of the client-counsellor relationship
10
Q
strength (gsh)
A
- effective
11
Q
weakness (gsh)
A
- not all forms of GSH can be effective or useful
- this is because the flexibility of GSH can work against it: it ‘blurs the boundaries’ with other forms of therapy
