Costumes & Makeup Flashcards

Q

MICKEY (Age 7)

A

At age 7, it is clear to the audience that Mickey enjoys going outside to play at lot, so I think that his costume would be covered in mud and dried patches of dirt. His top would be stretched and oversized since Mrs J probably can’t afford decent clothes for her children, so they have to wear hand me downs. His trousers would also be frayed around the cuffs, the knees would be a lighter shade of brown than the rest of the trouser, to show how worn it has become. His clothes would be dull colours such as dark green, brown or grey to show that the family can’t afford expensive materials.

Q

MICKEY (Age 14)

A

At 14 years old, Mickey would mainly be seen wearing his school uniform, which would still be quite scruffy but you’d be able to see where he’s tried to tuck his shirt in and do up his tie properly. The bits of the shirt that hadn’t been tucked in would be hanging out of the bottom of his jumper, which would have frayed sleeves and the bottom might be a bit torn as well. It would also still be oversized, since a lot of his clothes would be hand me downs from Sammy or his other siblings. He wouldn’t have much dirt on his face as when he 7 years old, but there would still be the odd mucky patch but it wouldn’t be too noticeable.

Q

MICKEY (Age 18)

A

Since Mickey is working now, he would be able to buy his own sized clothes sometimes but he still wears oversized coats and jumpers, for example. He may buy them oversized himself so that they can last him a few years so that he doesn’t have to buy anymore. As an adult he would be clean and would try to keep his hair well groomed, cut and kept out of the way whilst he was at work at the factory. He would wear shoes that were worn down and scruffy but it wouldn’t matter too much since he worked in a busy environment where it was dirty all the time anyway.

Q

MICKEY (Age mid 20s)

A

Once Mickey had gotten out of prison, I think that he would’ve stopped caring about his physical appearance quite a lot as he became depressed and isolated from people he cared about. His clothes would either be too small or too big, since he didn’t spend much time picking out sizes that suited him, and they would be plain and dull. His face would be very pale, but wouldn’t have much dirt on it. His shoes would still be worn out and he would rarely change out of the clothes he is wearing because he doesn’t want to/doesn’t have the energy anymore; the only times he would change would be when Linda told him to.

Q

EDDIE (Age 7)

A

At age 7, I think that Eddie would always be dressed smartly with no creases or stray threads hanging from his clothes, as Mrs Lyons can afford quality clothing for him in expensive materials such as polyester. His clothes would be a perfect fit and he would be wearing multiple layers when the weather got colder. In the warmer weather, though, he would be wearing a white polo shirt underneath a grey wool jumper in quite a thin material. He would be wearing smart trousers in a slightly darker grey than his jumper that were in pretty much perfect condition.

Q

EDDIE (Age 14)

A

Eddie’s costume would be very similar to when he was younger. Mrs Lyons would still dress him very smartly and he would make sure to take great care in what he wore. Though he spends a lot of his time in school now, his uniform would be pristine and a comfortable fit. It would be make of expensive materials and would have few layers, but the material would keep him at a nice temperature. It would be white, grey, blue or bottle green (since these colours were considered expensive in the 60s/70s). He might wear a smart coat sometimes, similar to the material of a suit jacket, but not the same style.

Q

EDDIE (Age 18)

A

Eddie would wear expensive materials and clothing, still, and he would wear items that were weather and university appropriate. He could wear a woollen jumper made of wool or polyester (or both so show off his wealth to the audience). His trousers would be made of the same material that suit trousers were made of, and they would be a beige/brown colour, another popular colour. He would wear smart shoes and possibly an expensive watch, too, which Mr or Mrs Lyons may have bought for him.

Q

EDDIE (Age mid 20s)

A

He would be quite pale now, unlike a few years back, but he would still look healthy and well taken care of. Since he works in an office now and is very professional, he would wear a suit like Mr Lyons and would probably have his own briefcase. He would wear a grey suit white a white shirt and a pinstripe tie in a musty blue colour.

Q

LINDA (Age 7)

A

As a 7 year old, Linda would dress very girl-ish, even though she could be seen as a bit of a tomboy. She would always be seen in a dress with a white collar and buttons up the front. It would be a dark red or grey colour and would be made of cotton. Her shoes would be similar to Mrs Lyons’, with a single strap across the top to hold them in place; both of these things are most likely hand me downs. She wouldn’t wear any makeup at this age, but she might wear a headband in her hair.

Q

LINDA (Age 14)

A

As a 14 year old, Linda would wear her school uniform almost every day. This would consist of a black pencil skirt, a black cotton jumper, a pinstripe tie and a white shirt, which has a few creases in. She may also wear black/grey tights, too. She would wear a bit of makeup now, but the most noticeable part would be her lipstick and blusher, probably. She would also still wear a small headband in her hair, too. She may also have a few hair bands around her wrist.

Q

LINDA (Age 18)

A

As an 18 year old, Linda would wear clothes that would show her maturity since she is now married and expecting a child. She would wear jumpers and tops that were made of a nice material and looked presentable. Her shoes would also be neat and clean, and her coat would be made of warm cotton. She may wear a small watch on her wrist and a bracelet.

Q

SAMMY (Child)

A

As a child, Sammy’s costume would consist of clothes that were stretched out to his size and would not fit very well on him. This may be because they would be hand me downs or because he stretches out his clothes himself when he’s playing. The colour his clothes would be very dull and make of a scratchy material with threads hanging off of it from the bottom. It would have patches of dried mud and dirt spread all around it since he spends most of his time outdoors and his shoes would be wearing away at the soles too. His face would also be very muddy.

Q

SAMMY (Adult)

A

As an late teen/ adult, Sammy would dress a lot more maturely and would wear hand me down / second hand leather jackets almost all the time, and he would have on a grey t shirt or jumper underneath. He would also wear beaten trainers that frayed near the edges and washed out jeans in a deep blue/grey with patches that had become lighter is colour over time due to how much he wears them.

Q

MRS JOHNSTONE (Act 1)

A

In act one, Mrs Johnstone’s costume would consist of quite run down clothes, such as a dirty apron from the cleaning she does for Mrs Lyons and she would also wear a cleaning dress that fell just below her knees in a beige colour. It would have a white collar that had started to fray around the edges due to its age. She may wear skin coloured tights like Mrs Lyons, but these would be a luxury for her as she might not be able to afford them all the time. Her shoes would be a dirty black colour and would be starting to wear away around the heels. Her makeup would be quite nice, though, as she would try to make an effort with it. She would have read lipstick like Marilyn Monroe and she would have blusher, too.

Q

MRS JOHNSTONE (Act 2)

A

Since in Act 2 she no longer works for Mrs Lyons, she would rarely wear her apron anymore, and would have a lot cleaner and presentable clothes. She would still wear similar shows, though she would’ve replaced her old pair with a new pair. Her makeup would be similar to act one, maybe she would wear a little less, though.

Q

MRS LYONS (Act 1)

A

In act one, Mrs Lyons would wear clothes that represented her smart and middle class lifestyle, and she would be seen wearing a knee length pencil skirt in a light grey colour with a cardigan on, as well; this would also be grey but the shade would be slightly darker and it would be made of a warm, soft material. Her shoes would be black leather with a single strap across the middle. She would also be wearing skin coloured tights and small earrings in her ears. Her makeup would be subtle and discreet, with nude coloured lipstick and beige coloured eyeshadow with maybe a slight bit of blusher.

17
Q

MRS LYONS (Act 2)

A

I think that her outfit wouldn’t have changed much, it may look more creased however, since her character becomes more panicked and paranoid towards the end of the play and these clothing choices would clearly show this. Her makeup would look rushed too (if she was wearing any), and if she wasn’t, she would go completely bare faced.

18
Q

MR LYONS

A

Mr Lyons’ outfit would be neat and tidy all the time. Like Eddie and Mrs Lyons, his outfit would have no creases. He would be wearing a pristine white shirt with cufflinks and he would also wear a dark blue suit made of polyester with matching suit trousers. Along with this, he would wear a pinstripe tie in a lighter blue colour. His shoes would be made of a brown leather. Wearing these items would be prime to showing his wealth.

19
Q

MICKEY’S TEACHER

A

Mickey’s teacher would have a very scruffy uniform, that would probably consist of a creased, white shirt that wouldn’t be tucked into his trousers and he wouldn’t wear a tie, either. His jeans would be faded from their colour and the cuffs would be frayed as well.

20
Q

EDDIE’S TEACHER

A

Eddie’s teacher would look very professional and would be wearing smart clothes, such as a suit and tie in white and grey. The suit would be made of polyester and would be a minimalistically patterned on a grey background with a pinstripe tie. He might wear a watch, too and his shoes would made of expensive leather.

21
Q

NARRATOR

A

The narrator would be wearing a smart, black suit with a matching black tie and shoes that would be very neat and taken care of. He would also wear a neat, crisp white shirt with no creases in and his whole outfit would be very smart and presentable. The dark colours of his suit would mimic his mysterious manner and personality.
