Small Area Variations
Practice variations in practice patterns associates with geography, demographics, etc.
Single-payer System
Centralized controlswould allow cost=containment efforts to sweep through the entire healthcare delivery system
Top-down control
Like Global Budgets established for entire sectors of health care delivery systems.
Health planning
A government undertaking to align and distribute health care resources so that, at least in the eyes of the government, the system will achieve desired health outcomes for all people.
Certificate of Need
Would have to be granted for state before building new facilities
Peer review
General process of medical review of utilization and quality when it is carried out directly by or under the supervision of physicians
QIOs
Private organizations composed of practicing physicians and other health care professionals in each state who are paid by the CMS under contract to review the care provided to Medicare beneficiaries
Quality
The degree to which health services for individuals and populations increase the likelihood of desired health outcomes and are consistent with current professional knowledge
HRQL
Health Related Quality of Life A person’s own perception of their health based on ability to function, role limitations etc
Institution related quality of life
A patient’s quality of life while confined in an institution as an inpatient
Quality assessment
the measurement of quality against an established standard
Quality assurance
Same as Quality Improvement. It is institutionalizing quality through ongoing assessments
TQM
Total quality management. Continually improving quality through all levels and functions of an organization.
Validity
The extent to which it actually assesses what it purports to measure.
Reliability
Extent to which the same results occur from repeated applications of a measure.
