What is a cosmetic?
Include many products applied on our bodies
Defined as any substance or preparation that is intended to be placed in contact with the external parts of the human body

- Content by weight or volume
- Manufacturer’s batch number
- Name & address in SG of company responsible for bringing pdt into mkt

How is the ingredient list labelled?
Listed in descending order, starting with the one in the greatest amt in the product
What are some common terms that may be misleading?
“Natural”
- just implies ingredients are from plants or animal products
“Hypoallergenic”
- implies that products are less likely to cause allergic reactions
“Alcohol-free”
- pdts do not contain ethanol but may contain other alcohols such as fatty alcohols (cetyl alcohol)
“Fragrance-free”
- pdts have no persceptible odour but may contain fragrance ingredients to mask offensive odour originating from raw materials used
“ Non-comedogenic”
- pdts do not contain pore clogging ingredients that could lead to acne
“Cruelty-free”
- pdt not tested on animals
“Shelf-life”
- amt of time which cosmetic is good under normal conditions of use and storage
What are some prohibited ingredients in cosmetics?
Benzene, mercury, chloroform,CFCs,Tretinoin,antibiotics

Hydroquinone
Musk ketone
calcium hydroxide
p-Phenylenediamine (used in hair dyes)
