Cosmetic Chemistry Flashcards
What is a physical change? Give an example.
Change in form or physical properties of a substance without the formation of a new substance
ex: ice changing to water/water turning into steam
What is a chemical change? Give an example
change in the chemical composition of a substance where a new substance is formed having different properties from the original
example: iron turning into rust or wood turning into ash
What are the 3 states i’d matter? Describe each
solid: has a definite size, volume, and shape
liquid: has definite size but no shape
gas: has no definite size or shape
What are physical properties of matter?
color, odor, weight, density, specific gravity, melting point, boiling point, and hardness
Hydrogen
- colorless, orderless,tasteless gas
- lightest element
- found in chemical
Oxygen
- most abundant element on earth
- colorless, orderless, tasteless gas
- 1/2 of Earth’s crust, 1/2 rock, 1/5 of air, 90% of water
Water
- most abundant of all substances
- 75% of earths surface
- 65% of human body
what is a solution? what type of mixture is it?
uniform mixture of 2 or more mutually miscible substances.
physical mixture
exfoliants aid in doing what for the skin?
aid with extractions
what does ph stand for?
potential hydrogen- relative degree of acidity or alkalinity and is measured on scale of 0-14
