What does COSHH stand for?
Control of substances hazardous to health 2002
what is COSHH?
- COSHH regulations were first introduced in 1988 but have been amended several times since
- they require employers to control hazardous substances that employers and others may be exposed to during work activities
what are common substances covered under COSHH?
- bleach or bleaching agents
- oxidising agents e.g. bleach, peroxide, nitric acid
- flammable chemicals
- poisons
- caustic agents
- acids
what are the 8 steps of COSHH?
step 1:assess the risks- work-out what hazardous substances are used in your workplace and the possible risks to peoples health
step 2: decide what precautions are needed before starting work with hazardous substances
step 3: prevent or control exposure
step 4; ensure that control measures are used and maintained
step 5: monitor the exposure
step 6: carry out appropriate health surveillance
step 7: prepare plans and procedures to deal with accidents, incidents and emergencies
step 8: ensure employees are properly informed, trained and supervised
how does COSHH promote health, safety and security in HSC and CC settings?
- act requires employers to carry out risk assessments to prevent or control exposure to hazardous substances
- it requires employers to have procedures in place for safe working with hazardous substances
- it requires employers to provide information, training and supervision so that work activities can be carried out safely
