Corrosion and Combustion Flashcards
What is oxidative corrosion?
where oxygen reacts directly with metals (eg, iron rusting)
What is a electrochemical reaction/corrosion?
Electrochemical reaction, any process either caused or accompanied by the passage of an electric current and involving in most cases the transfer of electrons between two substances—one a solid and the other a liquid.
What is corrosion?
- Defined as the degradation of a metal due to a reaction with its environment
- Corrosion is usually an oxidation reaction
- Occurs whenever a gas or liquid chemical attacks an exposed surface (metal usually)
- It is accelerated by warm temperatures and by acids and salts
- Corrosion often produces oxides or other compounds on the metals surface, such as iron oxide (rust)
Chemical formula and name of rust
Fe2O3H2O, hydrated iron oxide
What is the chemical name for the process rusting
Oxidation
3 main things needed for rust to occur
metal, oxygen and water
How does rusting work?
- it is a electrochemical process meaning electrons are transferred from iron to oxygen
- the free electrons in iron react with water and oxygen to create hydroxide
- then iron ion and hydroxed react to form iron hydroxide
- irons can produce iron (III) when with hydrogen, oxygen
- Iron (III) combine with hydroxide to create Iron (III) hydroxide
What does Anode mean?
a piece of metal that readily gives us electrons
What does Cathode mean?
a peice of metal that readily accepts electrons
What does electrolyte mean?
a liquid that helps electron and ions move
What is Combustion?
Combustion reaction is one in which a fuel combines with oxygen
Combustion is a chemical process in which a substance reacts rapidly with oxygen and gives off heat
The most common fuels are hydrocarbons, compounds made of hydrogen and carbon
Another common category of fuels are alcohols, molecular compounds that contains the -OH group
When hydrocarbons or alcohols undergo combustion they both form the products carbon dioxide and water.
What must there be for combustion to occur?
- need fuel, oxygen and heat
What is incomplete combustion
Incomplete combustion of a hydrocarbon fuel occurs when there is a poor supply of oxygen. Less energy is released. Water is still produced from the hydrogen atoms. Instead of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide or particulate carbon (known commonly as soot) or a mixture of both are produced.
