Correlations Flashcards
Are correlations experimental or non-experimental?
Non-experimental.
What are correlations?
Research which analyses the strength and direction of a relationship between two co-variables.
What is a co-variable?
These are the variables that are being analysed to see if they have a relationship.
What kind of data do correlations require?
Quantitative data.
What are correlations plotted on?
Scattergrams (scatter diagram).
What are the three main types of correlations?
- Positive correlations.
- Negative correlations.
- Zero correlations.
What is the difference between correlations and experiments?
Experiments establish a cause and effect relationship between one variable that is manipulated.
Whereas, a correlation measures two co-variables to establish an association or relationship without manipulating one of the variables.
What is a positive correlation?
This is where, as one variable increases, so does the other variable.
What is a negative correlation?
This is where, as one variable increases, the other variable decreases.
What is a zero correlation?
This is where there is no relationship between the co-variables.
What is the correlation coefficient?
This is a number that represents the strength and direction of the relationship between the two co-variables.
What scale does the correlation coefficient vary on?
It varies between -1 and +1.
What does a correlation coefficient of -1 mean?
Perfect negative correlation.
What does a correlation coefficient of +1 mean?
Perfect positive correlation.
What does a correlation coefficient of 0 mean?
No correction.
