Correlations Flashcards
Correlation
-a mathematical technique in which a researcher investigates an association between two variables (co-variables)
-a mathematical technique in which a researcher investigates an association between two variables (co-variables)
-the variables investigated within a correlation
Intervening variables
-variables other than the co variables that may INTERVENE and effect the correlation
Types of correlation
List
Positive correlation
Negative correlation
Zero correlation
Positive correlation
- as one co variable increases
- so does the other
Negative correlation
- as one co variable increases
- the other decreases
- as one co variable increases
- the other decreases
-there is no relationship between co- variables
Correlations
Strengths
-useful preliminary tool for research
-if correlate strongly/have interesting parent
└ may lead to future research studies
-quick and cheap
-don’t need to control environment or manipulate variables
-secondary data can be used= less time consuming
Correlations
Limitations
-don’t need to control environment or manipulate variables
└=only tells us how variables are related, but not why (which co variable is causing the other to change)
-third variable problem: intervening variable may be causing the change
