Q

co-variables

A

the variables investigated within a corr (height/weight) + plotted on a scatter graph
-not iv or dv - corr looks at association rather than a cause + effect relation

correlation coefficient

A

another way of demonstrating the relation by using a no. representing direction= strength or relation between co-variable

Q

what does ‘r’ stand for?

A

correlation coefficient
The co-efficient will be between 0(no relationship) to 1 (perfect relation) - pos or neg

A

If an increase in one variable tends to be associated with an increase in the other e.g height + weight

Q

Negative correlations

A

An increase in one variable tends to be associated with a decrease in the other e.g climb a mountain (height) = colder temp

Q

Strength of correlational studies (reliable)

A

-useful as show relation between two existing variables + how they affect each other
-can be basis of further research + commonly used to establish relalibillty of tests such as test-retest measure + inter-observer/rather reliability + if +0.80 + above then data is deemed reliable

Q

Another strength of correlational studies (ethical)

A

-sometimes ethically/practically impossible to manipulate variables for an experiment
-e.g to show relationship between unemployment + suicide s you would have to make people unemployed to see effect on them

Q

Limitation of correlational studies

A

-may show relationship but doesn’t show cause
-e.g a study could show no. Of acts committed however not same as shiwih through experimental manipulation of iv that watching to fr a long tine causes violence

17
Q

Limitation of correlational studies (validity)

A

-may lack validity as the 2 variables must be operationalised + therefore this means that you may lose some useful info regarding the variable
E.g would be difficult to operationalise a persons anxiety of injections
