Correlations Flashcards
what is correlation?
the measure of the extent to which two variables are related
What is a positive correlation?
relationship between the two variables move in the same direction
e.g. as one variable increases so will the other
What is a negative correlation?
relationship between to variables in which an increase in one results with a decrease in the other
What graph is used to express correlations?
scattergrams
What does the correlation coefficient (r) indicate?
the extent to which the pairs of numbers for the two variables lie on a straight line, values over 0 indicate a positive correlation while those under 0 indicate a negative correlation
What is a perfect negative correlation?
-1
What is a perfect positive correlation?
1
Why does correlation not equal causation?
a correlation only shows the relationship between variables which means there could be a third variable that’s involved
What is the difference between an experiment and a correlation?
an experiment tests the effect that an independent variable has upon a dependent variable but a correlation looks for a relationship between two variables
