What deaths must the coroner hold an inquest for?
A
- Suicide
- Institutional deaths (Police, Corrections, Oranga Tamariki, Mental Health etc)
- Cause - where the Coroner is not satisfied of the cause of death

What deaths must be referred to the Coroner?
A
SCUMBIE
- Suicide
- Cause unknown or still being determined
- Unnatural or violent
- Medical misadventure or mistake
- Birth or during childbirth
- Institutional deaths such as in prison, police custody etc
- Enactment that requires it

In a sudden-death situation, what paperwork is required from external sources?
A
- Verification of Death (VOD) from a nurse, midwife, doctor, advanced paramedic or paramedic
- A medical cause of death certificate issued by a Doctor (if a Doctor is willing to issue one)

What do you contact in a sudden death that needs referral to the Coroner?
A
National Initial Investigation Office (NIIO)

What is the purpose of an inquest?
A
To determine:
- the fact that a person has died
- the identity of the deceased
- the cause of death
- the circumstances of the death
- when and where the person died

What can a GP issue in regards to a death?
A
A medical certificate confirming cause of death

A
To determine the likely medical causes of death for referral to the Coroner.
