Coronary Heart Disease Flashcards
what is coronary heart disease
when arteries that carry blood becomes narrower with cholesterol build up
how does CHD affect health
narrow arteries are unable to carry oxygen rich blood to the heart and this can lead to angina (chest pain)
what happens if the blockage is below the neck
heart attack
what happens if the blockage is above the head
stroke
what does high sugar lead to
sweets and drinks with high sugar levels will lead to obesity and HBP which will therefore lead to CHD
what does high total and saturated fat lead to
fast food and snaking in high fat food lead to obesity and HBP and this lead to cholestrol build up in the arteries which can lead to CHD
what does low polyunsaturated fats lead to
polyunsaturated fat reduces heart attacks which reduces heart attack and omega 3 will lower the cholesterol build up and reduce CHD
what does high in salt lead to
if too much salt is added to food this can lead to HBP which will therefore lead to CHD
what does low in fibre lead to
fibre helps to make you feel full so you will stop snaking and grazing in food which will reduce from HBP and obesity
fibre also reduce the amount of cholesterol in the blood which will reduce CHD
what does lack of fruit and veg lead to
are rich in anitoxidants which slows down the rate of cholesterol build up in the artery walls
what does alcohol lead to
high alcohol intake can cause HBP and CHD and alcohol is high in calories which can lead to obesity
what does lack of regular exercise lead to
if you do not burn off the fat then there is the risk of HBP and obesity which then can lead to heart disease
what does smoking lead to
smoking thickens the blood increase blood clots aand the nicotine causes the heart to work faster which can lead to HBP and CHD
what does family history lead to
if people in he family has obesity, HBP, CHD they you are more prone to these conditions and if they have bad diet then kids and going to learn from that diet
what does family income lead to
lack of money can cause people to snack on sugar, fatty foods and people with money will eat out more and it is hard for them to control the intake of salt, fat, sugar
can lead to obesity, HBP, CHD
