Core practical 6 Flashcards
Why is the flask surrounded with an ice bath to cool the mixture before adding concentrated sulfuric acid?
To cool the mixture because the reaction with the sulfuric acid is very endothermic
Why are anti-bumping granules added to the reaction mixture
They prevent large bubbles forming controlled boiling.
Why is the apparatus set up to heat under reflux?
prevent loss of any volatile substances
What are the errors with this apparatus?
Gap between the condenser and the flask
Vapour escapes
Water is flowing the wrong way through the condenser so it doesn’t fill with water
There should be a stopper on the condenser build up in pressure
What is the position of the aqueous vapour in the separating funnel?
On top of the water as it has a lower density than 1-bromobutane
Why are steps 8 9 and 10 done after HCl is removed?
Sodium hydrogencarbonate reacts with the HCl neutralises it
the tap releases the carbon dioxide allowing it to escape
tap absorbs water
