2.2.4 [Non polar and polar molecules] Flashcards
What is a dipole?
A dipole is said to exist when 2 charges of equal magnitude but opposite signs are separated by a distance.
What are permeant dipoles?
If the 2 atoms that are bonded together have sufficient difference in electronegativities a polar bond forms. More electronegative atom draws more of the negative charge towards itself and away from the other atom this produces a permeant dipole.
How is HCL a permanent dipole?
The charge difference between H and CL is called permanent dipole
HCl is a polar covalent bond
HCl is non-symmetrical so its a polar molecule
Why is CCl4 a non polar molecule?
Symmetrical molecules are non polar even though they contain polar bonds
Why are diatomic molecules non polar?
Hydrogen and Chlorine are non polar 2 atoms in each molecule have the same electronegativity. Distribution of bonding electrons is identical.
How can polyatomic molecules be non polar?
Both of the bonds are polar in the molecule but the dipoles cancel out.
The arrow represent the dipole. Arrow points to the more electronegative atom and it take a slightly negative charge represented by delta +
Why is Boron chloride non polar?
What is a dipole moment?
The polarity of a molecule is determined by its dipole moment
for diatomic molecule this is defined as the difference in charge x the distance of separation between charges.
