2.2.2 [Dative covalent bonds] Flashcards

1
Q

How is a dative covalent bond formed?

A

A dative covalent bond is formed when an empty orbital of one atom overlaps with an orbital containing a non bonding pair (lone pair) of electrons of another atom

Q

What are the conditions for dative bonding?

A

In order for a dative bond to form the acceptor atom must be electron deficient. Available orbitals for the electrons to occupy. A dative covalent bond is the same as a normal covalent bond. Same bond strength.
