Core Practical 1: Determine Acceleration of falling object Flashcards
1
Q
CP1 Method
A
- Drop an object through a light gate
- Measure time taken and distance from where object released and light gate
- Use v²=u²+2as
2
Q
CP1 Apparatus
A
- Object
- Clamp
- Clamp stand
- Metre ruler
- Light gate
3
Q
CP1 Analysis
A
- Plot v² against s
- gradient is 2g
4
Q
Potential systematic error for CP1
A
Air resistance as object falls through light gate
Increases resistive force; decreases velocity; less accurate
Measured g will be lower than true value
5
Q
Why is a gradient useful in CP1?
A
Takes less account of anomalies
6
Q
Eval / How to make CP1 more accurate?
A
Small t values
- Use larger distance
Air resistance
- Acts on card; acceleration will be less than g
Path not directly vertical
- Introduces uncertainty in measure of h
7
Q
How to use graph to determine g?
A
- Repeat at different release heights and calculate v for each height
- Plot graph v² against s
- Gradient = 2a
- Divide gradient by 2 to determine acceleration
