What are the benefits of a cordon?
Separate those at risk from the hazard
Facilitate the operations of emergency services

What does a cordon denote?
A hazard area within which a level of training, PPE, supervision or information is required for safe operations

What is an inner cordon?
To restrict or exclude fire service or other emergency services from the scene of operations (hazard zone)
How is an inner cordon boundary be marked?
Yellow barrier tape with ‘Hazard Zone’ written in black.
Who gives approval for people to enter the inner cordon?
Only the IC or nominated officer
What is an Outer Cordon?
A boundary surrounding the inner cordon that separates the public from areas used by emergency services for support activities.
How is the outer cordon marked?
Using white barrier tape marked in red ‘Fire Service - do not cross’
Who controls the entry and exit points of the Outer Cordon?
The police
What is a traffic cordon?
Established beyond the outer cordon to prevent unauthorised access to the scene.
Who establishes and maintains the traffic cordon?
Normally the police.
What tools are available to identify the positioning of a cordon?
Each brigade atlas should have an acetate overlay which are designed for cylinder incidents
or use the CSS on board the CU.
Who should you tell if you implement a cordon?
Everyone on the incident ground and control.
What information about the cordon should you tell Control?
The position, suitable approach routes or RVP for oncoming vehicles
