Conditions needed for Corals
30 degrees north or south of the equator.
Needs a good amount of sunlight.
Waves for oxygen.
Require salt water environment.
Fringing reefs
Grows quickly in shallow water.
Develops on outer edges of the land around islands.
Bearier reef
Grow on the edge of the continental shelves, often some distance from the shore.
Separated from mainland by the lagoons that are often deep and wide. eg the great Beaver reef. aprx ( 2000km)
Atoll
Mainly in the pacific, some in the Indian ocean.
Made entirely from atolls.
Circular or Oval and enclosed of Lagoon
Importance of reefs
Protect coastlines from erosion
Forms barrier against tropical storms and tsunamis.
Tourist attraction ( Great barrier reef)
Fishing areas
Threats to reefs
Tourism_ anchors,
people touching coral
Pollution from boats, tankers.
