Can journalists ‘lift’ stories from their rivals ?
There is no copyright infringement by reporting re-written versions of facts published by others.
But do not lift EXCESSIVE bits of work and quotes (10-30%).
Make sure you are giving sufficient acknowledgement to author.
And - The material must also be publicly available (eg online)
This is according to the Copyright designs and patents act 1988 section 30 - defence of fair dealing.
With a private / domestic picture - who has what rights ?
Person who commissioned picture - moral rights
Photographer - has copyright
Can you use the fair dealing defence to lift photographs?
No. Photographers own copyright
And commissioner owns moral rights
May need both their permission to use if pic is private
How many seconds of video clips can be used without permission as long as copyright owner is acknowledged?
