Copper Considerations Flashcards

1
Q

Twisted Pair Cable

A
  • Copper cable used extensively for telephone and data networks
  • One pair of insulated wires twisted together forms a balanced pair
  • Pair carries same signal, but with different polarity
  • This enables receiver to distinguish signal more effectively
  • Completed with insulating jacket
  • Most is UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair)

Q

Shield Twisted Pair (STP)

A
  • Less susceptible to interference and cross talk
  • Required for some Ethernet standards and in environments with high interference
  • Screened cable: had thin foil shield around all pairs. Designated as (ScTP) or Foiled/Unshielded twisted pair (F/UTP) or foiled Twisted Pair (FTP)
  • Fully shielded has braided outer screen and foil shielded twisted pairs. Referred to as Shielded/foiled twisted pair(S/FTP)
  • Must used screened or shielded connectors

Q

RJ- 11

A
  • Smaller and used with 2 or 3 pair UTP
  • Room for 6 wires but 4 are most commonly used
  • Innermost pair typically carries dial tone and voice circuit
  • Used for telephone systems

Q

Copper Termination Standards

A
  • Each conductor in 4 pin data cable is color coded
  • Each pair is assigned a color (Blue, Orange, Green or Brown)
  • First pair has color striped with white, second is solid color
  • Two main standards: T568A and T568B

17
Q

Plenum Cabling

A
  • Plenum Space is space in a building designed to carry HVAC systems.
  • Fire retardant cabling using Treated PVC or Fluorinated Ethylene Polymer (FEP
  • Less flexible, but no effect on bandwidth
  • Cabling that moves between floors must be firestopped
18
Q

Coaxial

A
  • Made from two conductors that share same axis
  • Core conductor is made of copper wire (Solid or stranded)
  • Enclosed by dielectric(plastic) insulation and a wire mesh
  • Typically used as drop cable for Cable Access TV (CATV) and broadband cable modems
  • Usually terminates in F-type connectors which screw in place
19
Q

Twinaxial

A
  • Similar to Coax, but contains two inner conductors
  • Used for datacenter 10GbE (unofficially referred to as 10GBASE-CR and 10GBASE-CR4
  • Interconnected 5 meters for passive and 10 meters for active cable types
  • Terminates using SFP+ Direct Attach Copper or QSFP+ DAC tranceivers
