what is the main cause of copd?
smoking
what are some clinical manifestation of copd?
cough
exertional dyspnea
wheezing
spututm production
barrel chest
prolonged expiration
finger clubbing
what type of breathing can we encourgage for these patients?
pursed-lip breathing
we must be careful for giving these patients oxygen for what reason?
because too much oxygen can reduce their natural drive to breath
these patietns wont have aneima, instead they will have too much red blood cells, why?
because their body needs for extra oxygen so more blood more oxygen
if a patient with copd is having trouble breathing what do we do?
sit them up
apply bipap
what are the two medications types we should not give to copd patients?
opioids
benzo
(morphine, hydromorphome, jydrocodone, oxycodone)
( diazepam, lorazepam)
how much fluid should these patietns be consuming?
8 glasses (2-3L a day)
should patietns with copd get vaccines and which ones?
pneunomoccocall every 5 years
flu shot every year
what type of diet is recommened to these patients?
high cal and protein
how do we teach pursed lip breathing?
inhale 2 seconds via nose (closed mouth)
exhale 4 seonds with pursed lips
