coordination compounds Flashcards

1
Q

What is linkage isomerism?

A

Ambident ligands that can link through 2 different donor atoms give rise to linkage isomerism. - NO2, CN, etc.
[Co(NH3)5NO2]2+ and

Q

What is ionization isomerism?

A

Same molecular formula, different ions in aqueous medium
[Co(NH3)5Cl]SO4 and
[Co(NH3)5SO4]Cl
–> first gives white ppt with BaNO3 and second gives white ppt with AgNO3

Q

What is solvate isomerism?

A

Depending on number of solvent molecules getting attached to central metal atom, the molecular and structural formula may differ
[Co(H2O)6]Cl3 and
[Co(H2O)5Cl]Cl2.H2O
–> first is blue second is pink
