Coordination and Response (Eye & Nerve best done with diagram) Flashcards
Accommodation
Adjustments made by the eye to produce a clear image on the retina
ADH
A hormone produced by the pituitary gland which is involved in control of water levels in the body, makes the collecting duct in the kidneys more permeable to water so more water is reabsorbed from the urine back into the blood.
Auxin
Plant growth factor involved in control of cell elongation
Brain
The organ which coordinates the activities of the nervous system. Part of the Central Nervous System.
CNS
Central Nervous System - brain and spinal cord
Diabetes
Disease where blood glucose concentration cannot be controlled properly
Ectotherm
A cold blooded organism (uses the environment to control its body temperature)
Effector
Causes a response or change when stimulated by a nerve impulse
Endocrine
A gland which secretes a hormone into the blood
Endotherm
A warm blooded organism (maintains its body temperature using physiological mechanisms)
Exocrine
A gland which secretes a hormone into a duct which leaves the body e.g. salivary gland
Geotropism
The directional growth of a plant in response to gravity
Gland
A group of cells which secrete a particular substance
Glucagon
A hormone produced by the pancreas that acts to increase blood sugar
Glycogen
Excess glucose in the body is converted to glycogen for storage to be used at a later date.
Homeostasis
Maintaining a constant level of substances and constant conditions in the body.
Hormone
A substance that is transported in the blood and acts as a chemical messenger
Impulses
An electrical signal transmited along a neurone
Insulin
A hormone produced by the pancrease that acts to decrease blood sugar
Motor neurone
Nerve cell that transmits impulses from the CNS to the effector
Neurone
A nerve cell - there are three types - sensory, motor and relay
Neurotransmitter
When a nerve impulse reaches the dendrite at the end of the axon, chemical messengers called neurotransmitters are released and diffuse across the synapse (gap between the two neurons) and binds to the next neuron.
Phototropism
Growth of a plant towards light
Receptor
A cells which detects stimuli (a change in its environment)
Reflex
A simple behaviour involving a rapid, automatic response to a stimuli
Reflex arc
The nervous pathway associated with a reflex
Response
An action from the body caused by a stimulus
Sensory neurone
Neurone that transmits impulses form the receptor to the CNS
Stimulus
A detectable change in the environment which generates a response
Synapse
A junction between nerve cells
Tropism
The growth of a plant towards or away from a stimulus
Vasoconstriction
decreasing the diameter of small arteries
Vasodilation
Increasing the diameter of small arteries
