Biological Molecules & Levels of Organisation Flashcards
Active Site
The part of an enzyme into which a substrate fits during a reaction
Amino Acid
The monomer from which proteins are made, contain carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen (some have sulphur)
Carbohydrate
a biological molecules containing carbon, hydrogen and oxygen only. Examples are starches and sugars
Catalyst
A substance that speeds up the rate of reaction and is not used up in the process
Denature
To destroy an enzyme with excessive heat or extreme non-optimum pH which change the shape of the active sige
Enzyme
A catalyst produced by living things - a protein that catalyses chemical reactions
Enzyme substrate complex
Formed when a substrate binds to the active site of an enzyme
Fatty Acid
Long chain acid molecules that form lipids with glycerol
Glycerol
An oily liquid, one of the building blocks of lipids
Lipid
Biological molecules made of glycerol and fatty acids. Fats and oils belong to this group. They contain carbon, hydrogen and oxygen.
Protein
Biological molecules made up of chains of amino acids
Starch
A large, insoluble carbohydrate that acts as an energy store in plants
Substrate
A substance which is acted on, or used by, something else
Organ
Group of tissues that carry out a particular function
Organ system
A group of different organs working together
