Cooling Systems Flashcards
State machinery being cooled by main propulsion cooling system?
Gas Turbine Cooling.
Plummer block emergency cooling.
Main forced lub system cooling.
Controllable pitch propeller if fitted.
State Machineray being cooled by the Auxiliary cooling system?
Diesel Generators.
Air conditioning plants.
When would a cross connection between PORT and STBD be used?
If there is a drop in pressure of the cooling system and there is a need for emergency cooling of diesel generators. Or, in special operations, ie, flying.
What temp do white, metal bearing melt at?
115°C
What might happen to machinery not cooled correctly?
May seize, melt or create fire.
Why is FW used in cooling system?
Certain machinery may be vulnerable to rust.
Certain machinery may be vulnerable to salt water contamination.
Definitions of FW & SW?
FW:
Less than 0.5% salt.
SW:
More than 3% Salt.
When would FW be cross connected to SW?
During maintenance. Allows for pump to draw on opposite side of Ringmain, to carry out maintenance on pump strainer.
Whose permission would be needed for Cross Connection?
MEO.
