Control Over The Fascist Party And Fascist Internal Divisions Flashcards
How had Mussolini struggled to assert leadership over the Ras
-Ras acknowledged him as leader of Fascism, they were reluctant to accept central direction.
-Their violence between 1921 and 1922 sometimes embarrassed Mussolini.
-The ‘March on Rome’ was probably a concession to radical squadristi.
-The creation of a state-funded national militia helped to ensure their continued loyalty.
-Matteoti Crisis 1924: Ras showed that they still had authority, and demanded the creation of a dictatorship
The last Party congress June 1925: Mussolini demanded internal disputes end and obey the orders of its leader.
End of 1928: he had organised another purge of Fascists suspected of being disloyal – the principle was established that all appointments would be made by Mussolini in Rome.
What were internal divisions within fascism
Squadristi demanded continued violent raids.
Former Socialists wanted a reorganisation of industry.
Nationalists wanted a revision of the WWI peace settlements.
Only Mussolini could provide unity – the various factions realised this, and each sought his attention. Mussolini swayed to and fro each of these at various times, as his priorities seemed to continually change, but it was he alone who controlled party direction.
