Control Of Cell Division Flashcards
How is cell division regultated?
Tightly regulated by both external and internal in eukaryotic cells
What happens when cells grow uncontrollably and cell checkpoints are lost?
Cancer
Describe phases of the cell cycle and checkpoints

Cell division does not occur….
At the same rate in all cell types
Describe the regulation of the cell cycle by internal factors.
Cyclic, cds, mpf how do these Drive the mitosis stage
What can the amount of cyclin and cdk do?
Increase or slow cell division
Other external factors which can control cell division
Nutrient concentration and cell to cell contact
What can a hormone binding to the outside of a cell do?
Binding to a specific receptor by complementary fir could induce a change in division rate
What can carcinogens do to the cell cycle?
They mutate genes which produce protein products (gene products) which control the cell cycle checkpoints
What happens when a cell grows uncontrollably?
Tumour
What do drugs cause that treat cancer?
Stop rapidly dividing cells, and are non specific, causing side effects
What are the conditions necessary to culture cells in a laboratory?
Basic steps:
Tissue of interest is dissected to yield cells of the same type
Proteolytic enzymes (break down proteins) are added to release cells from connective tissue
Cells are placed in a culture medium which contains nutrients required for growth and maintenance
Culture is then kept in a flat flask at optimum temperature
Cells will grow to cover the bottom of the flask and can then be used for experimental work -they will only divide about 50 times
Limitations of cell culture
Can be costly
Can end up being producing waste which needs to be disposed of carefully (as it might be living material)
Often the cells are artificially manipulated to grow out quickly and may not mimic the natural body.
