Cellular Metabolism Flashcards
Define cellular metabolism
The biochemical processes in cells
Describe the important roles of the inner membranes of the chloroplast and mitochondria floor photosynthesis and respiration
Mitochondria: cristae contain enzyme and coenzymes for the process of aerobic respiration facilitated cycle. Respiration is facilitated by the Krebs cycle.
Chloroplast: have thylakoid (one of the stacks of granum) contain chlorophyll, with increased surface area by arrangement. Enzymes that facilitate photosynthesis occur within the Calvin cycle.
Both: have own DNA which allows for a protein template, ribosomes are able to synthesise own proteins/enzymes and increased SA means there is more room for ribosomes and enzymes to be attached.
Why is a different enzyme required at each step in a metabolic pathway?
Due to the specialised active sites
What occurs in a metabolic pathway when an enzyme does not work?
Accumulation of substances
What is released at each step of a metabolic pathway?
Heat
Why are many processes done in regulated steps?
Controlled energy release, intermediates, homeostasis (even amount of energy release)
What kind of chemicals can interfere with cell metabolism?
Penicillin, carbon monoxide, lead, cyanide, hydrogen sulphide
