Control of blood volume Flashcards
How does arterial pressure affect urine output?
Increased arterial pressure causes an increase in urine output.
ADH is released by the pituitary gland in response to what?
- Increased osmotic pressure
- Hypovolemia
- Angiotensin II
How does ADH increase blood volume?
It increases water permeability in renal collecting ducts (decreasing urine production).
What cells produce Renin?
Juxtoglumerular cells
What hormone opposes the RAAS system?
Atrial-natriuretic hormone
How long many amino acids long is the atrial-natriutic hormone?
28
What causes the release of the atrial-natriuretic hormone?
It is released in response to stretching of the atria
What percentage of blood volume is lost in class 1 shock?
10-15%
What percentage of blood volume is lost in class 2 shock?
15-30%
What percentage of blood volume is lost in class 3 shock?
30-40%
What percentage of blood volume is lost in class 4 shock?
> 40%
What reflex responds immediately to hypovolaemia?
The baroreceptor reflex
What is the response of the body later to hypovolaemia?
- Arteriolar constriction
- Decreased renal blood flow
- Baroreceptors plus thirst
Name some resuscitation fluids which are given in response to severe hypovolaemia
- Colloid fluids (gel/starch/albumin) or Hartmann’s fluid
What other factors affect blood pressure control?
- Cortex (emotions, nerves from cortex to CVC centre)
- Time of day
- Respiration
