Control of blood pressure Flashcards
What is Hypotension?
Low blood pressure
What does hypotension do?
Decreases supply of oxygenated blood to tissues
Hypotension symptoms
- dizziness
- fainting
- circulatory shock
What is Hypertension?
High blood pressure
What is the damage caused from hypertension?
Damages blood vessels
What does hypertension do?
- increases capillary filtration forces
- increases afterload & work for heart
What does hypertension increase the risk of?
- heart disease
- aneurysm
- kidney disease
- stroke
- antherosclerosis
- pulmonary oedema
- eye damage
How can blood pressure be measured?
- arterial catheter
- sphygmomanometer
What controls blood pressure?
- changes to cardiac output
- total peripheral resistance
How do you calculate Arterial blood pressure?
Arterial blood pressure = Cardiac output x Total peripheral resistance
How do you calculate Cardiac output?
Cardiac output = Heart rate x Stroke volume
What factors affect the regulation of blood pressure?
- NS
- hormones
- local factors
What receptors send sensory info to the cardiovascular centre?
- baroreceptors
- chemoreceptors
How do baroreceptors function?
Sense blood pressure
Where are baroreceptors located?
Wall of right atrium
