Control Mechanisms Flashcards
Variable
Any state or condition in the body that can change or vary
Sensor
Identifies the characteristic or condition being controlled
Integrator
Receives input from from a homeostatic sensor
Effector
Organs such as muscles or glands which increases or decreases variables
(Body temp, Blood sugar, Heart rate)
Afferent
A signal is traveling toward the centre point of reference
Efferent
The signal is moving away from the centre reference point
Intracellular Control
Mechanisms that regulate functions within the cell
Intrinsic Control
Operate at the tissue and organ levels
Extrinsic Control
Operates at the system and organ levels (hormonal regulation)
Feed forward
Anticipation of an event that will follow (salivating before eating food)
