What is a contrast bath?
The repeated immersion of an extremity or part of an extremity into a tub or tank of hot water and alternating with a tub or tank of cold water has been proposed to increase blood flow
How do contrast baths work?
Though to trigger a vascular pumping action caused by vasodilation (warm) and vasoconstriction (cold)
Are contrast bats effective?
Studies have shown it to be neither effective or ineffective
If you decide to do contrast baths what should you do?
Trial in clinic and see how the patient does. If they do well have them do it as part of their HEP with proper education
What are contraindications to contrast baths?
Same as other thermal modalities
What is the temp range for contrast baths for hot water?
100-111º F
What is the temp range for contrast baths for cold water?
55-65ºF
What are the parameters for contrast baths?
Place body part to be treated in warm water for 4 minutes
Transfer to cold water for 1 minute
Treat for 4-5 cycles and end in warm water for 4 mins
