Contraindication - definition and examples
a situation that requires the therapist to modify or refrain from, to avoid possible harm
examples:
disabilities
impairments
fever
surgeries
injuries
allergies
medical devices (pacemakers or artificial joints)
some medication use
absolute contraindications
massage should be postponed – red light!
local contraindication
an area that must be avoided due to infection, inflammation, injury or medical device
Examples of treatment modifications - positioning
semi-reclined for breathing difficulty
seated if frail or unable to position themselves
side-lying for pregnancy
examples of tx modifications - procedureal
lighter pressure for frail client
assist client on and off table
stimulate client if overly sedated after tx
circulatory massage
any modality that directly moves blood and lymph through the body
contraindications for circulatory massage
diabetes - severely insulin-dependent
CVD - may dislodge thrombus (clot)
Edema - d/t heart, lung, liver, or kidney disfunction
Fever - may indicate acute infection
unexplained symptoms of fatigue, muscle weakness, and general aches and pains should be referred to a physician
medication contraindications
those that:
alter clients mental awareness
inhibit feedback - decrease clients sensation
compromise tissue quality
endangerment sites - define
areas where deep vigorous techniques and prolonged pressure should be cautiously applied or avoided since the area contains superficial blood vessels and/or nerves

ribs
armpits
sternum
xiphoid process
inguinal (groin)
umbilical
orbitals (eye cavity)
anterior neck (cervical triangle)
antecubital (front of elbow)
elbow
spinous processes
floating ribs
kidneys
popliteal area
Was to manage contraindications
- client cannot receive massage that day
- client can receive massage, but area will be avoided
- client can receive massage with a few tx modifications
contraindications are the responsibility of:
the massage therapist
examples of absolute contraindication
- highly contagious diseases
- widespread infection or inflammation as indicated by FEVER
-chronic disease is in exacerbated or acute stage - medically unstable
-state of medical emergency
examples of local contraindications
-recently injured area
-inflamed area
-area that contain medicated transdermal patches, chemotherapy ports, pacemakers, or other medical devices
-a lump, lesion, suspicious mole, or localized rash
-avoid enlarged lymph nodes unless yo possess advanced certification in lymphatic massage
therapeutic massage can do these 3 things to our internal environment that medication can also do
- stimulate a body process
- inhibit a body process
- replace a chemical in the body
