Instantaneity, interconnectedness, and interdependence.
What are some negative characteristics of globalisation?
Corporate mergers and conglomeration.
What are some positive aspects of change brought about by globalisation?
“The internet and other media have lined people across the globe together into a global village or virtual community”
What are some negative aspects of change brought about by globalisation?
“Globalisation and cultural imperialism might produce a monoculture, leading to the death of cultural difference and diversity”
Why should we care about media globalisation?
Because the media is taking advantage of us, and has the potential to be detrimental to cultures all over the world.
How can we make the best of media globalisation?
By taking full advantage of it. For example, if enough people lobby together to prevent a monoculture, then the media conglomerates will have to appeal to the needs of the consumers.
What could globalisation lead to?
“The homogenisation of world cultures, or to hybridisation and multiculturalism”
What is a Utopian view of globalisation?
The belief that the word can be brought closer together through the globalisation of communication, no matter where we are in the world.
What is the Utopian view the ‘agent’ of?
Empowerment, education, democracy, and equality.
What is a dystopian view?
The belief that although globalisation offers positive outcomes there are also significant financial and cultural ramifications.
What is cultural imperialism?
“One culture that spreads its values and ideas culturally, such as through the media rather than through direct rule or economic trading”
What is a positive outcome of globalisation?
The media educate us and help us to share in other cultures.
What is a negative outcome of globalisation?
“The media are implicated in wasteful and exploitative marketing practices that primarily benefit the top tier of corporate executives”
