The balckfriers theatre

A

The Tempest was made to be preformed in a Blackfriars
-after 1608, Shakespeares company got use of the Blackfriers theatre
- Blackfriars was an indoor closed theatre, use of artificial light, only held about 200
-The globe had been built in 1576 is Shoreditch in 1599 the lease of the land ran out so it was dismantled and ferried across the Thames and rebuild as the globe. It held about 3000 people, and was made out of timber
-smaller crowd sizes mean ta more exclusive crowd, made up of members of the court,(tickets were about 2 shillings per seat) hence the heavy reference of MASQUE throughout
- some critics have said that the 5 act structure was in conciliation of having to snuff and relight candles.

romance and tragicomedy

  • tragicomedy was appropriate for a christian society. In an absolute tragedy the good does not win, importantly comedy allows for good to win, and as retribution is crucial to a christian society, the blend of tragic comedy was made
  • Huberis, five act structure a tragic hero, fatal flaws, and a struggle between good and evil (features of tragedy in the tempest)
  • comedic scence, love story, visual elements, the appearance of a marriage (element of comedy)
