-feel bad for him
-innocent and child like
-animalistic, playing dead
-prospero always hurts caliban

-‘A man or a fish?’ native assumption of Caliban
-humerous
-trimcare - to drink greedily
’ hes a present…’

STEPHANO
-first thought Is how he can exploit caliban (colonialism and natives- link to gonzalo about exploiting the island , colonial veiw point)
‘Moon calf’
‘moon calf’ Trinculo (caliban is deformed, moon calf is someone born with physical deformity, conceived on the full moon)
-‘ four legs and two voices; a most delicate monster!’(Stephano)

CALIBAN
-parallel with alcohol and prosperos magic
-glorifying Stephano for giving him alcohol
-no longer obeying prospero
-he switches from one master to the next, submissive and subservient nature

STEPHANO
-blasphemous joke, kiss the bible in court, shows low moral values
‘swim like a duck….’

STEPHANO to Trinculo
-drinking and alcohol
-linguistic humour
‘hast thou not dropped from…’
‘hast thou not dropped from heaven?(caliban) ‘out o’th’moon I do assure thee’ (Stephano)
-thinks Stephano is god, influenced by the alcohol, funny
-caliban later says Stephano reminds him of Sycorax ‘I have seen thee in her ; and I do adore thee. my mistress / showed me thee , and thy dog , and thy bush’ audience feels sympathy for him

-cursing prospero
-has not learnt his lesson and is repeating his subservient position but this time with Stephano as his master.
- caliban has ‘long nails’
also shows calibans deep knowledge of the island
‘ban ban…’
‘ban ban ca-caliban / has a new master, get a new man’
-name = power . power of name. giving himself an identity , claiming himself
-‘freedom high day’ ironic as he’s just exchanged one master for another
