What are the types of minorities?
- Non-indigenous, immigrant groups
- Indigenous groups who lacked organizational capacity and external support
- Indigenous separatist movements
What sort of response and why for nonindigenous groups? Examples
Chinese minorities, lacked deep territorial affiliation. More willing to forego political and cultural right for economic benefit. (M, I - indonesian names, but close cooperation w government)
Malaysia and Indonesia. With the Chinese, problem was usually rejection by the majority - Indonesia AFC 1998
What sort of response and why for indigenous groups lacking organisational capacity and external support? Examples
Tolerance of state despite distinct ethnic identity
Minority consciousness from policies of exploitation. But lacked leadership and resources to develop into stronger resistance. Usually made do with perfunctory concessions. (P Cordellians, T Isan, M Orang Asli)
What sort of response and why for indigenous groups w separatist tendencies? Examples
Outright resistance and rejection of state. Experienced force from state, escalated minority consciousness into outright resistance (I Timorese, P Moros, B minorities)
