contemporary study - Sebastian and Hernandez-Gill Flashcards
what is the aim of the contemporary study
investigate development of phonological loop in children aged 5-17 by evaluating capacity in terms of digit span
to compare results of studies on phonological loop in adults, older adults, fvFTD, AD
what is the contemporary study method
570 volunteers
listen to 3 sets of digits and recall in same order
2/3 correct
extra digit added
what are the results of the contemporary study
5 = 3.76
17 = 5.91
AD = 4.2
fvFTD = 4.22
control = 4.44
what conclusions can be made from the contemporary study
digit span increases with age, spanish population reached adult levels at 17 due to word length effect
alzheimers doesnt seem to affect digit span
what are the strengths of the contemporary study
+ large sample of 570, more generalisable to other spanish students
+ excluded people with hearing, reading or language impairmwnta, increase validity, only language having an effect
+ ecological validity, carried out at lunch at school, natural environment where you learn
+ welsh had lower digit span than english because it takes longer to pronounce words, supports findings
what are the weaknesses of the contemporary study
- only 9 ftFTD ppts, cant generalise to people with that type of dementia to other people with ftFTD
- lack of mundame realism, dont learn numbers, use phonological loop to have conversation and read complex info
